Friends, Two weeks ago, I asked in our weekly Office Hours for your view on the biggest existential threat we face. Forty-three percent of you said climate change; 27 percent said authoritarianism; 17 percent said Artificial Intelligence; and 7 percent said nuclear or biological war. In contrast to that dystopian inquiry, today’s Office Hours question focuses on the most important lesson you hope America has learned since the start of the second Trump regime. I’ve made the rounds of several people whose political, historical, and philosophical insights I respect and come up with the four hopeful lessons that stand out. I’ll summarize them below.
