Hi a, There's one thing students tell me more than anything else: "No one has ever actually corrected my pronunciation and told me how to correctly position my mouth." They've watched YouTube videos, tried apps and AI, and maybe even had a few lessons. They know something doesn't sound quite right ("I sound very Italian", "I sound so flat", etc.), but they don't know what it is. So they practise everything, or they practise the sounds they think are the problem. But those aren't always the real problem. Oksana, a lawyer from Ukraine, thought she knew her problem areas. Her assessment found other sounds she was mispronouncing that "were not on the surface" (as she put it). Why is this so hard to do on your own? Well, because it's really difficult to hear your own pronunciation objectively. Even Patricia, an English teacher from Argentina who knows the theory of phonetics well, said that "having a renewed and objective assessment of my own spontaneous speech was a rewarding experience." That's why I recorded this week's podcast episode. I want to take you behind the scenes of the Pronunciation Assessment, so you know exactly what happens, from booking to getting your report:
