Capt Smit Machchhar has described what happened after he was stabbed in the cockpit of Flydubai’s flight FZ1073. He said he was still being attacked when he realised the plane carrying more than 170 passengers was sinking and that he had to do something. "I was of course fighting for my own life but at the same time I knew I was not going to let others die," he said in a video call with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Machchhar has been hailed a hero for opening the cockpit door, allowing passengers to overpower the attacker and for two reserve pilots onboard to land the plane safely in Saudi Arabia. Thanking Modi for the call, Machchhar said: "I wasn't feeling proud of myself before this. But I do now."
