Kathy Hochul has said she is "deeply disturbed" by how the investigation into an alleged gang rape of a student at Cornell University was handled. The 2024 case was investigated at the time but no charges were brought. Speaking on Friday, New York's governor said the woman at the centre of the case was "failed" at "every turn". The case was reopened last month after the woman - known as Jane Doe - filed a civil lawsuit. A spokesperson for the university said it is "committed to an independent external review of all aspects of how Cornell has handled this case". Meanwhile, students and staff on the campus said tension there had become palpable since the case resurfaced.
