In recent weeks Indians have been killed by tigers, leopards and elephants. Those are tragedies, but they are a consequence of a surprising success: India has done a remarkably good job of protecting wild animals. Our Ashoka columnist explains how.

The northern hemisphere has entered autumn, and winter is fast approaching. Buyers of natural gas are praying for a mild one. But if it’s colder than they expect, and the Iran war continues, they, and people who want to stay warm, are in for a most unpleasant price shock.

What to expect in the week ahead:

▸ The Reserve Bank of India is expected to make a decision about interest rates on Wednesday. The central bank has been intervening in currency markets in order to shore up the rupee, which weakened after America’s Federal Reserve raised rates in September. The annual inflation rate in the world’s sixth-largest economy rose to 4.82% in August.

▸A by-election on Thursday will test the popularity of two of Britain’s most prominent politicians: Andy Burnham, the newish prime minister, and Zack Polanski, the leader of the left-wing Green Party. Mr Burnham is not on the ballot in Holborn and St Pancras, but a victory for the Labour Party candidate would suggest that his honeymoon has not ended. Mr Polanski hopes to reverse a recent decline in his political fortunes.

▸ Since the start of the Iran war the cost of filling up a plane has soared. Delta Air Lines’ results on Friday will give investors a better idea of how higher fuel prices are affecting the aviation industry. The company’s previous earnings report in July reaffirmed its annual profit guidance, even though its adjusted fuel costs rose by 77% year on year.
