| | | | | Good afternoon! "Operation Mincemeat" essentially opened its national tour in Chicago (after technical rehearsals took place elsewhere due to tax incentives that Chicago really ought to match). It was a very good time, and if you didn't catch this show on Broadway, it's well worth your time. Especially if they improved the sound since opening night. I also wrote this week about the new Steep Theatre in Edgewater, which is very exciting news. It struck me as a perfectly scaled theater for this justly beloved Chicago theater company, known for its intense, high-quality acting and its choice of plays that Chicago would otherwise be unlikely to see. There also was big news last week about leadership changes at Lookingglass Theatre. See you at the theater. — Chris Jones, chief theater critic Chris Jones Recommends: “Theater of the Mind” in an open run by the Goodman at the Reid Murdoch Building; “Pandemonium, Please Hold” in an open run on the Second City Mainstage; “Vape! It’s now playing in Chicago for the first time. | | | | | The new theater of Chicago’s Far North Side is being built inside a former Christian Science Reading Room. It will seat about 75 people when it opens for its first production in January 2027. | | | | | Also in theater news this week, Albany Park Theater Project will host a final season of its remarkable “Port of Entry,” and the Stratford Festival of Canada announces its slate for next summer. | | | | | The theater announced Tuesday that David Catlin and Ericka Ratcliff will be its new co-artistic directors. Schwimmer has also said he’d like to act or direct at Lookingglass again. | | | | | Heidi Schreck’s 2017 play, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, gets authentic surroundings in this new production by Ways and Means Theatre. | | | |
