Afternoon Briefing

Monday, October 5, 2026

Good afternoon, Chicago.

At downtown sports apparel shop Chicago Sports & Novelty, manager Loretta Rizzo laid out a freshly stocked stack of Munetaka Murakami jerseys.

“We’ve sold out of these three times,” she said, pointing to the pile of black and white fabric with the White Sox first baseman’s name spelled out in Japanese characters.

Since the wild-card round started, Munetaka Murakami has had the fourth-bestselling jersey in all of baseball, and the top three selling jerseys for the White Sox, according to sports merchandise company Fanatics. But it’s not just Murakami gear that fans are snatching up. Sales of White Sox merchandise across the board are up two times last week compared with the previous week.

Here’s what else is happening today. And remember, for the latest breaking news in Chicago, visit chicagotribune.com/latest-headlines and sign up to get our alerts on all your devices.
