The Anti-Tyranny BacklashThese people think we owe them gratitude and votes in exchange for bribes and false promises, while they they govern like they answer to no one. That’s precisely why they’re losing.Consider these recent quotes from our overlords. I believe they help explain the backlash politics of the moment. Sam Altman, the OpenAI CEO, recently said, “we believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology [artificial intelligence] and people having the agency.” Altman is not a politician, but he is in bed with Donald Trump; his comments fill in the blanks of Trump’s full-speed-ahead policy of unconstrained “superintelligence” development. Trump himself recently posted, "The only reason that communities throughout the U.S.A. should not want Data Centers is if they want to end up being backwards and poor,” only to clarify that he, personally, doesn’t “want them right next to my house.” When he’s not falsely blaming Joe Biden for the shambles of his own presidency, or falsely saying that the costs of most things have fallen, Trump frequently walks up to and over the line suggesting Americans should be grateful for higher prices. “It's a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe,” he insisted in Nebraska this week, before lapsing into some kind of doomsday fever dream or fantasy. “They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay." JD Vance wants us all to be thankful gas isn’t more expensive, which it might be if he and Trump hadn’t prosecuted this war they lost so well. We are told voters are in rebellion against Republicans because they’re upset about prices qua prices, data centers qua data centers. Many Democrats believe this disaffection is the tidal force propelling the blue wave. I want to suggest there’s more to it. ...
