| Matthew Farwell trial recap: Opening statements address Sandra Birchmore's death |
After three days, a jury has been seated in the Matthew Farwell murder trial and opening statements were delivered Friday. Once opening statements concluded, jurors were excused for the day shortly before noon for a long holiday weekend, with the first witnesses scheduled to take the stand on Tuesday. The former Stoughton police officer is accused of killing a pregnant Sandra Birchmore and staging her death as a suicide at her Canton apartment in 2021 to stop her from revealing alleged ongoing sexual exploitation dating back to when she was a child. The case has drawn widespread attention and is the latest Massachusetts criminal case in the spotlight after the recent trials of Lindsay Clancy and Karen Read. No video is allowed in the courtroom because it is a federal trial. Here’s a recap of what happened Friday: |

| A beautiful fall Saturday, then a soaking from Isaias |
Isaias made landfall as a powerful Category 2 hurricane near Destin, Florida, last night, bringing bands of heavy rain, strong, damaging winds, and storm surge for parts of the northern Gulf Coast. As the storm continues to churn inland today and weaken over time, some of Isaias’ remnants will impact our weather here in Greater Boston late Sunday evening into Monday. Until we get there, though, let’s enjoy a bright, sunny day on this Saturday! High temperatures will be in the mid 60s. It’s a great day for leaf peeping and fall fairs and festivals. Enjoy! Much of the morning and early afternoon on Sunday will be dry, but we will see increasing clouds in advance of rain moving in this evening. In fact, the remnants of Isaias will push rain over southern New England through the night into early Monday morning. |

| Mike Minogue on the final stretch in his run for governor Mass. |
It’s the home stretch for Mike Minogue, the Republican nominee for governor of Massachusetts. The veteran and former CEO is taking on incumbent Gov. Maura Healey, a matchup voters got an up-close look at this week with the first gubernatorial debate. During the hour-long exchange, Healey repeatedly called on Minogue to call President Donald Trump and tell him to stop the war with Iran, citing Minogue’s previous donations to the Trump-Vance ticket and a fundraiser held at his home. |
