FDA Seeks Nominations for the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee; Announces New Members

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requesting nominations by December 14, 2026, for voting members to serve on the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee (TPSAC). Individuals may self-nominate or be nominated by any interested person or organization.

Specifically, TPSAC is seeking to fill two vacancies with physicians, dentists, scientists, or health care professionals practicing oncology, pulmonology, cardiology, toxicology, pharmacology, addiction, engineering, or any other relevant specialty. The committee consists of 12 members, including a chair. Almost all nonfederal members of this committee serve as special government employees. Selected members will be invited to serve for terms of up to four years, which will begin after they are appointed.

Those interested in submitting nominations for membership may do so electronically through the FDA Advisory Committee Nomination Portal or by mail to Advisory Committee Oversight and Management Staff. Please see the Federal Register notice for further information, including mailing address and instructions. To receive first consideration for the vacancies, nominations should be submitted no later than December 14, 2026.

Nominations received after December 14, 2026, will be considered for future vacancies.

The FDA is also announcing the selection of four new voting members to TPSAC:

  • Holger Behrsing, Ph.D.
  • Kim “Skip” Murray (Representative of the general public)
  • Margaret Nolan, M.D.
  • Andrew A. Strasser, Ph.D.

The new members have expertise that spans preventative medicine, chronic diseases, tobacco cessation and harm reduction, toxicology, cell biology, and health communication.

In addition to voting members, the committee includes non-voting members who are identified with industry interests. The FDA is also announcing the selection of a new alternate non-voting member:

  • Eric Ray Walker, Ph.D. (Representative of the interests of tobacco growers; alternate)
