Hey a, I want to tell you about one of my students from a few years ago, Martina (it's incredible that I still remember her story!). When she moved to England from Italy, she was a qualified engineer. But the only job she could get was working as a kitchen porter. The conditions were awful, hours were incredibly long, and she was making minimum wage. Martina had the skills, the qualifications and the practical experience to work as an engineer in the UK. However, in interviews, the biggest piece of feedback she got was "you speak too fast" and "your accent is so strong. It's hard to follow you". It was absolutely BRUTAL feedback. And she could feel her confidence chipping away each time she heard her Italian accent mentioned. So we worked together on her pronunciation for 6 months (we didn't try to "get rid of" Martina's Italian accent! We worked on her sounds, stress, intonation and rhythm, not "accent eradication". She was Italian and there was no hiding this unique quality and identity about her). After 6 months, Martina went to an interview and got her dream job as an engineer, going from earning just €18,000 a year, to over €50,000 OVERNIGHT!!! Her coaching didn't just cost her money. It paid for itself many, many times over! And it will keep paying her back every month for the rest of her career. So here's a question I want you to think about, a: What is your pronunciation costing you right now? Maybe it's the job interview where you knew what to say, but you got nervous and hesitated or stumbled over the sounds and words, making you sound less confident and professional. The promotion that went to someone who "sounds better" in English than you. The client call where you kept it short because you were worried about being misunderstood and felt too nervous and self-conscious about speaking English. The meeting where you had a great idea and stayed quiet because you were too shy to speak. Those moments don't show up on a bill at the end of the month. But they add up, and over your career they can cost you FAR more than just €1997. That's why you shouldn't see The Confident Communicator as a cost. See it as an investment in your career.
