Hello Franconia Elementary PTA Families,
As we gear up for an exciting spring filled with PTA events, I want to personally thank you for your continued support of our school community. We have some fantastic events on the horizon, including the Fancy Pants Dance, the Family Fun Run/Foam Party, and Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week. These events bring our community together and create unforgettable memories for our students—but we need your help to make them happen!
We’re currently looking for volunteers for these and other upcoming events. Your time and energy are invaluable, and every little bit helps. Please visit www.franconiapta.org/volunteer to sign up and learn more about how you can get involved. Together, we can ensure these events are a success for our students and staff.

Spirit Night: Chick fil A |
Mark your calendars for a fun and delicious evening at Chick-fil-A Kingstowne (5808 Kingstowne Center, Alexandria, VA 22315) for our Franconia Hill Elementary Spirit Night! On this special night, you can enjoy your favorite Chick-fil-A meals while supporting our school. Here’s how you can participate and help us earn 20% of registered receipts:
Drive-Thru, Front Counter, or Mobile Order: You can place your order through the drive-thru, at the front counter (carryout or dine-in), or using the Chick-fil-A App.
Let Them Know You’re Supporting Us: Be sure to mention you’re part of Franconia Elementary’s Spirit Night (our group name is “Penguins”) when ordering, or use the code “Penguins” in the app to register your purchase.
When: Monday, 5:00–7:00 PM.
Grab your family, enjoy a tasty meal, and help raise funds for our school—it’s that easy! We can’t wait to see you there!
RECAP: Virtual General PTA Membership Meeting |
- Principal’s Update: Principal Andrew Smith shared important updates, including the addition of new technology specialist Danielle Garrell and transitions in staff roles to support Multi-Language Learners. He discussed ongoing testing with iReady and SOL, upcoming Kindergarten Orientation, and potential boundary changes that could impact our school, emphasizing Franconia’s commitment to safety and equity amid recent policy shifts.
- After-School Clubs Thriving: VP Emily Kerwin reported a successful fall for after-school programming and exciting plans for spring clubs starting the week of March 17, including iCode, Lego, acting, dance, yoga, and Science Seed. She’s seeking input from parents of older students to boost engagement.
- Financial Success: Treasurer Lindsay Kunkle highlighted the PTA’s strong financial position, with fall clubs raising $6,400, the Holiday Shop netting $1,300, and savings on water station projects. A revised budget was unanimously approved.
- Upcoming Events: VP Kaitlin Baker previewed exciting events like Movie Night, Read-a-Thon, Fancy Pants Dance, and Spirit Nights at Chick-fil-A (March 3) and Hangry Burger (April 2). More details will be shared at our next in-person meeting.
- Community Impact: Guest Joy Wahler discussed proposed land use changes in the Franconia Triangle, which could add up to 50 elementary students to our school. Public hearings are scheduled for February 12 and March 19—stay informed and voice your opinion!

Edison High School All Night Graduation Party Mulch Sale! |
Our neighbors at Edison High School PTSA are hosting an exciting Mulch Sale to support the Class of 2025’s All Night Grad Party. For just $6 per bag, you can purchase high-quality Double Shredded Brown Hardwood Mulch (3 cubic feet) and pick it up or have it delivered on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
