Good afternoon. It’s Wednesday, March 12.

In today's newsletter:

  • The likelihood that Mount Spurr, the closest active volcano to Anchorage, will erupt is increasing, with scientists now saying an eruption is “likely” within weeks or months.

Twenty years before the Titanic changed maritime history, another ship touted as the next great technological feat set sail on the Great Lakes. The Western Reserve was supposed to be one of the safest ships afloat, but it sank in a storm in 1892. More than 130 years later, explorers have discovered the wreckage off Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Anchorage weather

It's mostly cloudy today with a high of 33 degrees and a slight chance of snow flurries. The chance of snow will increase overnight and into tomorrow morning, though the rest of Thursday should be mostly sunny. Daytime temperatures will continue to hover in the mid-30s this week.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
