Jessie Holmes, a 43-year-old who came to Alaska from Alabama more than 20 years ago, cruised into Nome early this morning to earn his first victory in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
A reinsurance program pioneered by Alaska to lower the state’s marketplace insurance rates is on the chopping block, having been identified for scrutiny by the Trump administration, according to the state's insurance director.
The Alaska Department of Revenue forecast that lower-than-anticipated oil prices are expected to result in a $70 million hit to the state treasury in the next fiscal year.

Holmes has raced in every Iditarod since 2018, finishing in the top 10 six times including this year's win, previously as high as third place. “It’s hard to put into words, but it’s a magical feeling. It’s not about this moment now, it’s about all the moments along the trail,” he said after reaching the finish line.
