President Donald Trump issued a universal 10% baseline tariff on all imports, effective April 5, and country-specific duties on U.S. trading partners.
The latter policy, effective April 9, means countries including China, Japan and the European Union will face duties higher than the baseline rate, Trump said at the White House Wednesday. The taxes levied will equate to half of what those countries are currently charging the U.S., as calculated by the White House.
The tariffs announced today do not impact previously enacted 25% duties on Canada and Mexico. However, tariffs on imports compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement will remain paused.
