The high-pitched barking stopped me in my tracks. Jasper and I exchanged glances and instinctively knew that Zac was up to no good. We turned in the direction of the yelps. Zac sounded more like a seal than a dog. We knew what that meant. Either he’d found prey or he was in trouble.
Zac had come to me all skin and bones at just over a year old. Rejected from five households, he was withdrawn and morose. I guess he expected to be abandoned again. It took a month before he wagged his stumpy tail, but over time he learned to put his trust in me. Now, he wiggles his whole body with joy.
