Sure, there are five games left to play this month and 27 games is a small size.
Still, May can’t come soon enough for Rafael Devers.
An 0-for-4 effort in Thursday’s 4-3 loss to Seattle offered more evidence that Devers has not found his high gear yet. Two strikeouts and a weak lineout and pop-up to the opposite field highlighted how the new designated hitter has not located his comfort zone.
That he came into the game with at least one walk in each of his last nine games showed that he still had a good idea about his strike zone.
Manager Alex Cora urged patience before the game against the Mariners.
“Obviously, the numbers are the numbers, right? But we’re comfortable with him getting on base,” said Cora. “Do we want him to do damage? Of course, but I think as long as he dominates the strike zone, he’ll start doing that. Obviously, numbers-wise, off to a slow start. But I think as far as the approach, this is the best we’ve seen him. So stay with the course, and he will hit.”
