I drew the above during my live, live-drawing session last night. What do you think: could you not talk about what’s going on for ten minutes?? Speaking of which, here is some highlights of what’s happening today: This is frightening, and we knew it was coming but it’s hard to hear. A county judge has been arrested by the FBI in Milwaukee on charges of obstructing immigration enforcement. FBI Director Kash Patel directed agents to arrest Judge Hannah Dugan on suspicion that she “intentionally misdirected federal agents away from” an immigrant being pursued by federal authorities, Mr. Patel wrote on social media. He later deleted the post. The administration has demanded that judges help in finding immigrants to deport. Mexican immigrant, Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, was in Judge Dugan courthouse to face misdemeanor charges when DEA and FBI agents came in to take him away. The judge refused and escorted Mr. FLores_Ruiz out of the courtroom, and then she was arrested, later released on her own recognizence. Patel wrote she “intentionally misdirected federal agents.” Here is the article that exlains in more detail what happened. Trump says he’s negotiating with China on tariffs, China says otherwise. What does it tell you that I believe China, over the president? The trade issues with China are worrying businesses and the stockmarket, so Trump is trying to hedge and pretend something is happening. China won’t budge, so Trump has to figure something out to save face, and the world economy for that matter. On a lighter note, Michael and I are going to the Annual Thurber Prize for American Humor event tonight, this year being held in NYC instead of Columbus Ohio, where James Thurber was born. The prestigious cash prize has been going to writers since 2004, for written humor in books. Last year, my husband and I suggested to the Thurber House that a prize be awared for cartoon art, and they agreed. We are thrilled to spotlight the art of the single panel cartoon, as one sees in The New Yorker. Last year, the award went to Roz Chast; this year, Paul Noth will received the honor. We couldn’t be happier for Paul, a great guy and great cartoonist. Here is a page from his website, showing one of his classic cartoons. Congrats, Paul! The Thurber Prize is named after one of the most talented practitioners of both humor writing and drawing. James Thurber is one of the reasons I am a cartoonist today, I copied his work as a 7-year-old and found it make my mother smile. I was hooked. If you are unfamiliar with his work, I suggest you look here at this wonderful site dedicated to his cartoons and writing! Heading out, s see you tomorrow. Thanks for being here, and for joining the live last night, as always. I will be on plane tomorrow, and in the morning, I will fill you in on what I am doing in LA! Happy Friday.
