April 25, 2025

Greetings, Team Langston Hughes:

Career Day was a tremendous success—thank you to everyone who participated and helped make it so memorable!

We’re now in our final marking period, and the last day of school for students—Wednesday, June 11th—will be here before we know it. Please take note of the following important reminders as we wrap up the 2024-2025 academic year:

  • Basketball Showdown – Tuesday, April 29th at 6 p.m. Come out and cheer on our Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball Teams as they face Carson Middle School right here at LHMS. Let’s bring the Panther Pride—loud and proud! Tickets are $5.00 at the door and will be sold Monday and Tuesday during lunches.
  • PTA Meeting – Monday, May 5th at 7 p.m. If you’re interested in serving on the PTA Board, we encourage you to attend this meeting. Your voice and involvement matter; we need you!
  • Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week – May 5th–9th Join us in celebrating our amazing teachers and staff. They go above and beyond every day, and we’re excited to show them how much they’re appreciated.
  • SOL Testing – May 6th – May 14th

Standards of Learning (SOLs) assessments measure how students are learning the state standards. The SOLs are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate what they have learned and what areas they may still need support in. Please partner with us by encouraging your student(s) to do their best on each assessment. Our goal is to help students reach their full potential, and an accurate SOL score is an important data point in that mission.  Click here to review our SOL schedule.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Yours in education,

Principal Mizell

SEL LESSON

On Monday, your child learned about self-concept—how they see and think about themselves. They learned that a person’s self-concept can affect their actions and decisions, which is why it’s important to develop a positive self-concept. Ask your student to explain what a self-concept is. Ask them why they think it’s important to have a positive self-concept.
