Message from Mr. Greata

We’re in the final stretch now that Spring Break is behind us! To help us finish strong, we’re excited to launch our "Make It On Time Challenge" for the month of May. This school-wide initiative encourages all students to get to class on time every day and rewards those who show consistency and commitment.

Throughout May, faculty and staff will be present in the hallways between classes to encourage timely transitions. We’ll also have a number of fun competitions and prizes, including:

  • Class Competition: Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors will compete for the title of the most punctual class—lowest total tardies wins a special prize!
  • Individual Rewards: Students with no more than one tardy in May will receive a special snack.
  • Raffle for Perfect Attendance: Students with zero tardies will be entered into a raffle for gift cards.

If you would like to support our efforts, we’re accepting donations of $5 gift cards. Gift cards can be dropped off at the main office—just follow the link in this week’s newsletter for more information. Thank you for helping us keep students motivated!

This week, we had the chance to celebrate some of the incredible people who keep our school running smoothly and safely. On Tuesday, we honored more than 50 of our dedicated bus drivers and attendants for National School Bus Driver Appreciation Day. These individuals are the first friendly faces our students see each morning and the ones who ensure they return home safely each afternoon. We are so grateful for their commitment and care.

We also took time to recognize our exceptional administrative professionals during Administrative Professionals Day. Their hard work behind the scenes keeps everything in motion, from welcoming families to supporting our staff and ensuring day-to-day operations run like clockwork. A heartfelt thank you to Jackie O’Brien, Alejandra Mendez, Debbie Glover, Darlene Sheppard, Alexa Pugnetti, Patrick Pacak, Marianne McLaughlin, Casey Delaney, Lynley Esposito, Michele Eovito, Lorena Greco De Cervantes, Meri Farling, Rena Francis, and Marianna Conroy—your efforts truly make a difference, and we are so appreciative of all you do.

Our students continue to shine in incredible ways. Our Rocket League Esports team added to their legacy this week by capturing their fourth state title in just three years—an extraordinary feat and a mark of true excellence. Thank you Mike Kuykendall and Johnny Shu for your support of the team!

Over Spring Break, our Deaf Academic Bowl team traveled to Gallaudet University for the national competition and made it all the way to the final round, earning second runner-up honors. Their performance was inspiring, and we couldn’t be more proud. Thank you Julie Clinch, Shan Pillai, and Rachel Silien for your support.

Also over the break, our Robotics team headed to Houston to compete in the Robotics World Championship. Representing our school on the global stage, they won four out of six of their events—an amazing accomplishment that reflects the countless hours of innovation, collaboration, and dedication they’ve poured into building and refining their robot. Thank you Adrian Jansen for your dedication and support of these amazing young engineers!

Looking ahead, we hope to see many of you tonight as our baseball and softball teams take on West Potomac. Tomorrow, please join us for our annual Relay For Life. Rally your friends and family, and let's make this event a day to remember. Also, don’t forget—Mamma Mia! opens next weekend! Make sure to grab your tickets for what promises to be an unforgettable show.

Wishing everyone a joyful and restful weekend!

Woodson Sports Physical Night

June 10, 2025

Every year, the Woodson Athletic Training Program hosts a Sports Physical Night. The goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete pre-participation examination screening that will leave student athletes with a valid VHSL physical for the entirety of the following School Year. Each year, it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports. The price will be $50 as it has been in previous years.

Hosting this event is our Athletic Training Program’s ONLY fundraiser for the year as we do not receive any funding from the county. ALL proceeds go towards helping the program purchase supplies. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. Appointment times will be available at 5:30, 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, and 7:30pm.

REGISTER FOR APPOINTMENT HERE

Woodson participates at Family Heritage Night at Columbia ES

Woodson Spanish Honor Society students volunteered to work the artifacts show and tell tables at Columbia ES Family Heritage Night to engage the younger students in conversation surrounding cultural objects from around the world.

We celebrated heritage through food, dress, music, and artifacts to educate families about the beautiful diversity we honor in FCPS!

School Health Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department and Fairfax County Public Schools School Health Services invite parents/caregivers of FCPS students to participate in a survey on satisfaction with school health room services. The survey takes about five minutes to complete and will be open until Monday, May 5.

School health rooms (clinics) are managed by public health nurses and school health aides. Those staff provide care for students who become sick or injured during the school day, who require medications during the school day, and/or who have a chronic health condition that requires management during the school day.

Additionally, the school health room staff:

  • Provide health education, communicable disease prevention, and health screenings.
  • Work with schools to help address the root causes of population health disparities so that all students have equitable access to educational and health opportunities.
  • Ensure that students have care for minor injuries and illnesses, and chronic health conditions, thus helping to minimize health barriers to learning.

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of school health room services as well as inform future planning for schools.
