Tech Tips for SOL Success!
As our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders prepare to take their SOL (Standards of Learning) assessments in a few weeks, technology can be a valuable tool to support your child's preparation at home. Here are a few ideas:
-
Practice with SOL-Type Questions: The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website has released practice items and sample tests (available at https://www.doe.virginia.gov/teaching-learning-assessment/student-assessment/sol-practice-items-all-subjects). Reviewing these together can help your child become familiar with the format and types of questions.
-
Interactive Review Websites: Platforms like Khan Academy (khanacademy.org) offer free video lessons and practice exercises covering a wide range of subjects. You can target specific skill areas where your child might need extra support.
-
Utilize School Resources: Check Schoology to see what your child has been learning this year. Teachers have posted assignments, games, and study guides throughout the year that your child can review.
Keep in mind that technology is just one piece of the puzzle. Combining these digital tools with encouragement and positivity will set your child up for success!

It is amazing how quickly the construction work is moving along! The blacktop, field, and former playgrounds are now showing major changes as the construction crew prepares for the construction of the 2-story building and extended parking lot. Students are transitioning to a rotation between the temporary playground and our inner courtyard for outdoor recess time. Construction will impact our Field Day, which will now be our FUN Day and hosted within the school building, as well as our International Night, which will involve us blocking off a part of the parking lot. Construction near the school building will be put on pause on SOL testing administration days, which take place in May.
Virginia SOL assessments are standardized tests designed to measure student achievement in reading, math and science and are given to students in grades 3, 4 and 5. They are used to determine if students are meeting the state's established expectations for learning. SOL online practice items are available at https://download.pearsonaccessnext.com/virginia/va-practicetest.html?links=1 - no sign in is required. The audio option is for students who are learning English as a second language or for students who qualify for this option. Paper pencil practice items can be found at https://www.doe.virginia.gov/teaching-learning-assessment/student-assessment/sol-practice-items-all-subjects

Greetings! This is my 20th year in education. I spent most of my career as an elementary school librarian. I took a break in service after my husband and I had twins - a girl and a boy! During this time, I was a homeschool portfolio reviewer.
A twin myself, my sister and I are graduates of FCPS and attended Parklawn ES, Holmes MS, and Annandale HS. This is my second year at Bren Mar Park ES, where my niece attended the entirety of her elementary school years.
I love to spend time with my family, cook, create on my laptop, walk by the Potomac, and dance to Afrobeats!
