Kindergarten Registration: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…

There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:
- Determine eligibility.
- Identify your local school.
- Gather documents.
- Fill out forms.
- Schedule an appointment.
After the appointment at the school (one parent/guardian must be present), the student will be ready for the orientation to be held on April 1st, 3:00 pm at Ravensworth Elementary School. Read more about the registration process.
Try Online Registration
Online registration for the 2025-26 school year is open. Parents/caregivers may register their new student(s) online for kindergarten through 12th grade. Learn how to begin the online registration process.
When registering, parents/caregivers will need to create or log in to an existing SIS ParentVUE account.
For additional information, please contact Teresa Dunbar, our school registrar, at (703) 426-3603.
The Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award

Nominations are open for the 2025 Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award. The Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC), sponsors this award to honor the legacy of Dr. Bussey, a founding member of the MSAOC and a longtime advocate for students and families.
This award recognizes an individual staff person, community member, or student who has demonstrated significant and impactful efforts to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students from groups who are marginalized or underserved.
Any FCPS employee, student, or community member can nominate an individual for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Monday, May 19, 2025. The winner will be recognized at the FCPS Equity Symposium on June 16, 2025.
Full details and the nomination information form can be found at the Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award website
Social and Emotional Learning Screener: Parent Reports

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of March, providing information on their SEL skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
Individual student SEL Screener results are available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.
For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the SEL Screener Results Family Guide or reach out to Todd Austin, school counselor, at wtaustin@fcps.edu with any questions.

Planning for the 2025-2026 School Year

It is time to start planning for our next school year. Developing class assignments each year is a complex process. School administration, classroom teachers, counselors, special education staff and specialists all have the opportunity to provide feedback on class groupings.
If you have feedback that you would like for us to consider, please add it to this form https://forms.gle/APdhxBuYfe1cJY2s7 no later than May 9, 2025. Late submissions will not be accepted. We will consider all feedback provided, but we are not always able to fulfill requests.
We respectfully ask that you do not request particular teachers. It is unfair to give special consideration to some families when it would be impossible to grant requests from all families. Please be aware that grade level assignments for staff sometimes change, due to late enrollments or other changes. Staff assignments are determined at the end of the summer.
Military-Connected Family Support

FCPS welcomes all of our new and returning military-connected families throughout the year! Whether your family is moving permanently to the school district or living here for a short time, our schools and support staff welcome you and will be able to assist with your transition into and/or out of our district.
Visit the FCPS Military Families webpage and sign up to receive the Military Families newsletter. Follow FCPS Military Families accounts on Facebook and Instagram for support and resources throughout the year. If you have any questions, please email the FCPS Family and School Partnerships team.

Chess Club

For everyone in grades 2 - 6 interested in learning and playing chess
- All levels welcome!
- Chess Club meets every Friday after school in the cafeteria (Chess club will not be held on any days the school is closed or there is early release).
- $130/semester (includes one club T-shirt per year and snacks)
Players are grouped by ability, not age. We teach the rules to beginners and strategy to experienced players.
Chess teaches responsibility, discipline, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Chess players learn how to make the most of their opportunities and how to turn a bad situation to their advantage. They learn not to make excuses for their setbacks, and to win and lose graciously.
Chess Club is offered through our partnership with the U.S. Chess Center (https://chessctr.org). All instructors are certified chess coaches.
For more information, contact Ravensworth PTA at president@ravensworthpta.org or the U.S. Chess Center at admin@chessctr.org
