Before Apple Inc. hired artificial intelligence executive John Giannandrea away from Alphabet Inc.’s Google in 2018, its AI efforts were spread out across the company.
The Siri team and other AI squads tied to Apple’s iOS operating system were located in the software engineering group. The hardware technologies team had its own AI-related people working on components like the neural engine for Apple’s processors. The company’s self-driving car project — which was very much an AI challenge — was overseen by a series of hardware executives. And there were some AI-related teams in the services and operations groups.
