As a lifelong dog owner, I have taken many to the kennel for boarding, but nothing prepared me for the terrifying scene that unfolded one early summer morning.
It was a quick weekend beach trip to Ocean City, New Jersey, but Maggie, our one-year-old rescue puppy, would be away from home for the first time. In the nine months since we had adopted her, this sweet and spunky black Lab/Pointer mix had become a cherished family member. She had separation anxiety, and we hated to be away from her and our five-year-old, equally adored Pit/Lab mix, Barkley. But, after a year of postponed travel plans, my husband and I and our two sons needed a post-pandemic night away.
