Dear Travel Fan, Memorial Day weekend and the kickoff of the summer travel season are almost upon us, and it feels like a very uncertain time in travel. Air traffic control problems at Newark Liberty International Airport have caused delays and cancellations across the country (we have this look at whether you should fly through Newark). And as our reporters Ceylan Yeginsu and Christine Chung have found, the evidence that there will be a slowdown in the U.S. travel industry is mounting, with a downturn in international visitors especially likely. When people do travel, they increasingly want to take part in experiences, not just see sights. This week Airbnb announced that it was relaunching its experiences business to allow travelers to book services along with their lodgings and to take part in things like cooking classes and tours. And, speaking of cooking classes, our Frugal Traveler put together three culinary experiences in Mexico City that taught her about the country’s culture and food. The interactive digital works of the arts collective known as teamLab draw crowds around the world. We’ve got a guide to eight you might want to visit. And on YouTube the leopards who appear on livestreamed game drives from a group called WildEarth have become stars — you can visit them in person, too. All eyes have been on Rome lately, with the death of Pope Francis and now the new pope, Leo XIV, leading the church. Our 36 Hours column tells you how to spend a long weekend there. Finally, our Tripped Up column aims to help travelers who feel they’ve been treated unfairly. This week, our columnist Seth Kugel not only gets a couple their money back, he gets a cruise line to change its policies about how guests are charged. Wishing you safe and happy travels,
