Learning Network: Our Summer Reading Contest begins!
Week 1
The Learning Network
June 6, 2025

Dear Reader,

Our 16th Annual Summer Reading Contest begins!

Every week for 10 weeks this summer we’re asking students “What got your attention in The New York Times this week? Why?” To participate in Week 1, students should choose something to read, watch or listen to in The Times and submit a response that answers those questions by 9 a.m. Eastern on June 13.

They can choose anything that was published in The New York Times in 2025, including articles, photos, essays, videos, podcasts or graphics. We hope students will click around to find their own great pieces, but we also know that not everyone who participates has a Times subscription so, each week, we provide dozens of free links to interesting articles, features and multimedia.

Students are invited to submit responses in the form of a 1500-character comment (about 250 words) OR a 90-second video. Their responses will be read by New York Times journalists and staff, as well as educators from around the world. We’ll choose at least one favorite answer to feature on our site each week, and we’ll announce the winners from Week 1 by June 24.

Let’s make this a summer full of reading!

Sincerely,
The Learning Network

RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

Three teenage boys photographed from a super-low angle so they appear to be toweringly tall. All three hold newspapers open in front of them. Above (or maybe behind?): the most perfectly blue sky there ever was, with just a few cotton-candy puffs of clouds skittering politely by.
