Tech Across the Globe

Midjourney lawsuit: Disney and Comcast teamed up to sue the artificial-intelligence startup Midjourney, accusing it of copyright infringement. At issue is Midjourney’s  image tool, which allows people to create vivid, AI-generated pictures using prompts.

Uber on the offensive: Uber filed its second racketeering lawsuit this year, suing a group of lawyers, medical providers and rideshare drivers in Florida who it claims staged car accidents, manufactured damages and received unnecessary medical procedures to take advantage of insurance policies in the state, costing the company millions in legal fees.

DoorDash’s M&A streak: DoorDash is continuing a recent buying spree, acquiring advertising technology firm Symbiosys for $175 million. In May, DoorDash announced it was buying the British delivery company Deliveroo for about $3.9 billion and SevenRooms, which specializes in restaurant tech, for $1.2 billion.

Mark Zuckerberg, fearing Meta Platforms Inc. has fallen behind rivals in the chase for artificial intelligence, has jumped into “founder mode,” Kurt Wagner reports in today’s Tech In Depth. Zuckerberg’s intense focus on trying to develop AGI, or human-level intelligence, is reminiscent of earlier efforts in which he turned his attention and his company’s resources on a specific project, such as live video or the metaverse. It hasn’t always been successful, Wagner writes.

The Big Feature

Electronic Arts and its BioWare studio had high hopes for Dragon Age: The Veilguard when it was released last year, Jason Schreier writes. But those hopes were never met, with revenue and game-player metrics falling far short of expectations — leading to a stock plunge for EA and major employee cuts at the studio, Schreier writes in an inside look at what led to the failure.
