Supervisor who has worked at Market Basket for 44 years suspended as conflict continues |
A shakeup at Market Basket has left many employees uneasy, with a longtime district supervisor claiming he was suspended simply for asking questions about the company’s direction under new leadership. While the board asserts the suspension of Paul Quigley was due to “disruptive behavior,” employees and former executives paint a picture of a company culture under attack, where dissent is being stifled. Quigley, who began bagging groceries as a teenager 44 years ago, found himself on paid leave after arriving at work at 5:30 a.m. on July 4. After rising through the ranks to oversee 22 stores, primarily on the South Shore of Massachusetts, he says his suspension stems from his inquiries into the company’s current state. |

Pitching prospect from Walpole wins MLB debut with Yankees |
A New York Yankees prospect from Massachusetts drew the start against the Seattle Mariners Wednesday night, and he got the win in his debut. Cam Schlittler, a native of Walpole and one of New York’s top prospects, was called up from the minors in place of injured Clarke Schmidt. The 24-year-old right-hander froze big league home run leader Cal Raleigh with a 100 mph fastball for his first strikeout and was charged with three runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. “Probably had more jitters this morning, honestly, waking up,” Schlittler said after the game. “I think once I kind of got to the field and got around everyone, I felt better about it. But I know my dad, just in general, gets more nervous than I do when I’m out there throwing.” |
