The latest reporting from The Intercept finds that Donald Trump is well on his way to creating an unaccountable police state befitting his totalitarian aspirations. Nearly every day, we see new videos of masked ICE agents, often dressed in plain clothes, snatching people up off the street without a warrant. We have no idea who these people are. What are their qualifications? How many have criminal records? Were any of them in the U.S. Capitol on January 6 or involved in other acts of political violence? And now, Trump’s so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” will provide a huge, $175 billion boost to immigration enforcement — enough money to make ICE the biggest law enforcement agency in the country and build a sprawling network of privately operated detention camps and prisons. Friends, we’re on the brink of a dark and dangerous new era in American history. The creation of a lawless secret police force is incompatible with democracy — and there’s no more urgent story to cover right now. But let’s be honest: No corporate news outlet has the guts to challenge the Trump administration on this. Half of them are stuffing money in his pockets in order to get access to Trump World or more favorable treatment on regulatory issues.
