Centennial
The University of Minnesota Press is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year thanks to its winning mix of scholarly, trade, and regional publishing programs. In this week’s magazine, we profiled children’s author Alan Gratz, who hopes his works of middle grade historical fiction can “teach empathy” to young readers. Simon & Schuster will publish Siri Hustvedt’s memoir of her life with the late Paul Auster next spring. Eva Longoria will direct the film adaptation of Xochitl Gonzalez’s Anita de Monte Laughs Last, reports Variety. The works of Dostoyevsky are capturing the hearts, minds, and wallets of Gen Z readers, according to Unherd. On Substack, author Karin Gillespie demystifies the “upmarket fiction formula,” and book marketing coach Fleur Hull lays out 10 ways to spot a scam publisher. Speaking of Substack, the Guardian rounds up the best newsletters written by authors. For Lit Hub, the editor of Fanny Howe’s final book pays tribute to the late poet. And poet Andrea Gibson has died at 49.
