NOAA Response Teams Provide Scientific Support to Well Rupture off Louisiana Coast
OR&R is aiding in the response to an oil and natural gas release following a well rupture in a marsh environment in Plaquemines Parish, southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana. OR&R is delivering cutting-edge, real-time visual surveillance to support coordinated response efforts across the Unified Command. Oil recovery and mitigation efforts are ongoing. NOAA leads scientific support to a multi-agency workgroup tasked with evaluating cleanup strategies.

Ten Years Later: Refugio Beach Oil Spill Restoration Brings Hope and Healing to California Coast
Ten years after the Refugio Beach oil spill, a long-term effort to restore the California coast and its habitat is well underway, thanks to a strong partnership, scientific expertise, and commitment to restoration. Over the last four years, work focused on repairing damage to birds, marine mammals, shoreline and underwater habitats, and recreational areas that were impacted.

Crabbers and Scientists Remove Fishing Gear, Protect Crabs
Supported by the NOAA Marine Debris Program, commercial crabbers and scientists are working together to remove derelict fishing gear and protect the Mid-Atlantic’s blue crab fishery. Projects have removed 2,300+ crab traps and returned dozens of fishable traps to commercial crabbers.

Resources for Hurricane Season Preparedness
 |
|
Hurricane season began June 1. OR&R has resources to help coastal communities better prepare for and respond to a hurricane’s debris impacts. The United States Emergency Response Guide is a nationwide resource designed for emergency responders, to improve response and recovery operations following any natural disaster or event that generates large amounts of marine debris. This document outlines existing response structures and agency authorities at the federal level to serve as a reference for all U.S. states and territories and support regional and national planning efforts. |

On the Ground with OR&R
OR&R scientists and partners from natural resource trustee agencies collected data on-site following the Well #59 rupture off Louisiana coast to support the Natural Resource Damage Assessment.
Passive samplers – silicone bands that absorb oil compounds from the water column – were deployed at the site in mid-May. These water column samples will be analyzed for oil compounds by the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science which will provide information on the level of exposure to oil in the impacted area.
