Columbia Pike Construction Open House: Recap

Columbia Pike Forward logo - no background

Last week, the project team for the Columbia Pike Multimodal Improvements Project provided an update on roadwork as we approach the end of this 5-year project.

The gist of it

The project is still on track to reach substantial completion (i.e. no more road excavation) at the end of 2025.

Watch the recorded presentation and hear questions from residents like you at ColumbiaPikeForward.com.

Questions from the Mailbag: Overhead Wires

Segment F - Wires

The transportation team receives frequent popular questions about construction on Columbia Pike, so we thought we'd share answers with newsletter readers, too!

Question: Why are there overhead wires and old poles in some parts of Columbia Pike? When will they come down?

Answer: The County is coordinating with utility companies like Verizon, Comcast and Dominion to remove the last of their wires, poles, and other equipment on Columbia Pike.  Once these are removed, the County can complete final paving and concrete work in those locations. The timeline of these removals depends on the utility companies.

Asphalt Installation on Westbound Lane

This Thursday, July 17, to Friday, July 18, crews will be installing asphalt in the westbound right hand lane of Columbia Pike, between South Courthouse Road and South Scott Street.

Three driveways adjacent to the work zone will be closed, with alternative egress via South Scott Street and South Courthouse Road.

Paving Work at South Walter Reed Drive

Last week, crews began demolishing the center lanes along South Walter Reed Drive to the north and south of Columbia Pike.

This demolition was in preparation for asphalt paving in the center lanes this week, as weather allows.

Segment D - South Walter Reed Drive - 07152025

Traffic Shifts During Paving

  • One lane in each direction will remain open on South Walter Reed Drive at all times.
  • Center lanes along South Walter Reed Drive will be barricaded until repaving is complete.
  • Police officers will help direct traffic through the intersection beginning Wednesday, July 9.
  • During asphalt paving, there will be rolling lane and crosswalk closures and temporary turn restrictions through the intersection.
  • All cross-traffic lanes on Columbia Pike will remain open.
