Boost to homes for retirees: A major expansion of a Dubbo retirement village is set to help alleviate some of the local housing shortages and allow dozens more residents to downsize. A sod-turning on July 16 at BaptistCare's Kintyre Living Village signalled the start of construction on the $25 million development, which will see another 40 units added to the existing 96. The majority of the units will be two- and three-bedroom homes, with residents expected to be able to move in by the end of 2026.

Gulgong gains a GP: Gulgong Medical Centre has reopened its doors after 18 months without a doctor. A new general practitioner has relocated with his family from Nelson Bay to Gulgong, while a local nurse practitioner is also set to begin. It's the result of a recruitment drive by not-for-profit Doctors 4 Mudgee, which offered a $45,000 incentive to doctors over three years with support from local businesses. Coordinator Kate Day says there have been region-wide impacts from the town's medical centre closure with nearby Mudgee practices closing their books due to demand, which then put pressure on Mudgee hospital.
Warren food hampers: More than 100 free food hampers have been distributed to residents in Warren as part of a new service from the Local Aboriginal Land Council. The packages contain more than $30 worth of non-perishable items and are available to all residents, including those who aren't Indigenous. It's in addition to the Warren Land Council's low cost food pantry that's run for the past year, with the free hampers supplied in partnership with a Sydney-based charity, Addi Road. Warren Land Council chief executive Jodie Redmond says these services are having a big impact on people's lives, with some residents telling her it can mean the difference between eating and not eating some days.
