So You’re a Surprise Emmy Nominee—Now What? |
When the Emmy nominations came out Tuesday, there weren’t a ton of surprises or upsets. The shows we expected to do well—The Studio, Severance, Adolescence—did very well. But there were some surprising inclusions, like Meghann Fahy for Sirens. The most exciting development of the day was Jeff Hiller’s nomination for the truly wonderful Somebody Somewhere, a series that always deserved Emmy love, but only received it postcancellation.
I’m Rebecca Ford, and now I’m thinking about what someone like Hiller or Fahy does now that they are officially an Emmy nominee? Hiller is already doing it: You get out there. The actor did some reaction interviews just as the nominations were announced. Hopefully, his nomination means that even more voters will tune into the show who may have skipped it in the first place. Of course, for actors like Fahy and Hiller, it’s likely that the nomination is the win, but a nice surprise is a nice surprise.
For series that have more realistic chances of winning, the next few weeks will involve maximum promotion. That includes lots of interviews. It’s a tough challenge because many of these shows have been out for more than a year. The most interesting battles seem to be Hacks versus The Studio in comedy and The Pitt versus Severance in drama. I know the studios will do all they can to make voters lean their way.
Of course, there were some disappointments. My colleague Richard Lawson wrote about the snubs for Andor, which didn’t get the love it probably deserved for its final season. I was also disappointed that great shows like Black Doves and Squid Game were blanked. But unlike Andor, those shows still have a chance for their next seasons—and Somebody Somewhere’s inclusion proves that you should never give up hope. |
