Credit: EPA/Shutterstock | New US tariffs against dozens of countries unveiled last week have come into force. Export-dependent economies in South East Asia were among the hardest-hit by the new tariffs. Manufacturing-focused Laos and Myanmar faced some of the highest levies at 40%, with some experts saying the Trump administration appears to have targeted countries with close trade ties with China. President Trump has also threatened a 100% tariff on foreign-made semi-conductors as he pushed tech firms to invest in the US. Major chipmakers that have made significant investments in the US appear to have dodged the new tariff, reports Osmond Chia. |

| BEYOND THE HEADLINES | How Hamas pays civil servants' salaries |
|
| | | Hamas's military wing, the Qassam Brigades, operates through a separate financial system, financed mainly by Iran. Credit: EPA | Two years of war in Gaza have weakened Hamas's military and political leadership. Yet Hamas has managed to continue to use a secret cash-based payment system to pay 30,000 civil servants' salaries. Amid soaring inflation, the token salary - a fraction of the full amount - is causing rising resentment among the party faithful. With no functioning banking system in Gaza, even receiving the salary is complex and, at times, dangerous. |
