We know — the economic times are hard. We believe that our work of reporting on the critical stories unfolding right now is more important than ever.

We need to raise $6,000 to meet our goal by August 10. If you’re able to make a contribution of any amount, your dollars will make an immediate difference in helping ensure the future of local journalism in Dallas.

Thanks for reading the Dallas Observer.

Subject: Support journalism that makes a difference

Hi Tupolef,

As a reader of the Dallas Observer, you know that our reporters cover what’s happening in Dallas with tenacity and integrity.

We exist to give a voice to ignored communities, add context to politicians' decisions and celebrate the city’s lively arts, music and food. We also put accountability first, which is crucial in a time of widespread misinformation and increasing attacks on journalists.

But do you know what goes into producing just one story, from start to finish? Our biggest stories, such as "They Who Are Exiled," cost thousands of dollars and countless hours of our time.

That story, about former members of a Waco religious community who claimed they were abused, coerced and eventually cut off from family by what they described as something akin to a cult, inspired former members to come forward with similar stories. It also led to threats of litigation from the church, but that’s a risk we’re willing to take because of the care we take in getting the story straight. There are certainly easier, safer stories to tell, but we do this because the story was important, and the former members must be heard.

If you think the truth has value, will you make a contribution today and help keep our work going?

Yes, I want to make a difference!

Your support could help fund our next big story.

With gratitude,

Kelly Dearmore
