A federal judge in North Dakota issued a decision Wednesday finding the Federal Reserve exceeded its authority in setting regulations for debit card fees, potentially forcing the central bank to revisit its approach.
The judge stayed his ruling to give the Fed time to appeal. That move was aimed at keeping “interchange transaction fees from becoming a completely unregulated market,” according to an order issued Thursday by the U.S. District Court of North Dakota.
