| | Netanyahu had initially said Israel intended to take over all of the Gaza Strip, but the plan only mentions Gaza City. Credit: Reuters | Israel's security cabinet has approved a plan to take over Gaza City, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office has announced. The plan lists five objectives, including disarming Hamas, returning all hostages, demilitarising the Gaza Strip, taking security control of the territory, and establishing "an alternative civil administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority". The controversial move has raised warnings from Israel's army leadership, opposition from hostage families and concerns that more Palestinians will be killed, reports Hugo Bachega. |

| BEYOND THE HEADLINES | The bottled water scandal gripping France |
|
| | | Under EU law, "natural mineral water" is supposed to be unaltered between the source and the bottle. Credit: Getty Images | Mineral water brands like Evian, Vichy and Perrier have been so successful in France and around the world thanks to an appealing image of purity and health-giving minerals. But after French media revealed that a third of bottled water was illegally treated, the spell broke - and the government's role in the scandal has become heavily scrutinised. "This really is our Water-gate," French journalist Stéphane Mandard tells correspondent Hugh Schofield. |
