“Ambient, ambient, ambient,” Argentine cult singer Leo García shouts to the camera, filming from his bed. Posted on YouTube, “Música Ambient Argentina” is a two-minute recap of musicians and records García considers fundamental to the genre. It is a hilarious, casual watch with bouncing images and dissolving transitions, but also proof of something bigger: the rich history and continued relevance of ambient music in Argentina’s scene. Artist and producer Gustavo Lamas, whom García shouts out in his video, is part of that history. Lamas’s Plural, released in 1999 by iconic label Frágil Discos, is described in the liner notes as “ambient dub” and was among the first Argentine entries in the genre. Reissued in 2021 by Amplio Espectro, Plural is a timeless reminder of a pre-internet era where experimental music was discovered by digging deep into Buenos Aires’s nightlife. Also pivotal to the ’90s experimental scene was electronic music composer Flavio Etcheto. Mostly known as a lyricist and collaborator of rock musician Gustavo Cerati, Etcheto’s solo records are nothing short of treasures. His contributions can be traced to La Algodonera (1988) and Ambient, a posthumous release from 2022. |
