Lucas Giolito hopped off the mound and turned his back to the play, knowing enough — about baseball, about the defense, about his night — to know what was about to happen. He did not need to see it with his own eyes.
In the seventh inning, his fourth pitch yielded the third out, a routine ground ball to second base. David Hamilton fielded and threw to Nathaniel Lowe at first, by which point Giolito was about to cross the foul line on the way to the visiting, third-base-side dugout at Camden Yards.
It was not the end of his start in the Red Sox’ 5-0 win Tuesday, but it was about as easy a moment as he had in an evening full of them.
