If you’ve been relying on a window or portable AC to survive the summer heat, now’s the time to give it a deep clean — before you pack it away for the season.

Air conditioners collect dust and debris over time, especially during heavy use. Cleaning your unit before fall not only helps it run better next year, but also keeps your space cleaner overall.

1. Unplug it, remove it from the window and let it drain.

2. Vacuum the vents to clear dust and debris.

3. Use a microfiber cloth or vent brush to clean small crevices.

4. If accessible, remove the front panel and filter. Soak the filter in warm water, spray with dish soap (like Dawn Powerwash), scrub, rinse and dry.

5. Wipe down the outer unit and panel with a damp, soapy cloth.

6. Once dry, reassemble and store in a clean, dry place.
