I first started wearing glasses at age five. I wore thick, black-framed glasses and many of my friends commented that the character Ralphie, in Jean Shepherd’s A Christmas Story, and I were almost twins. Sadly, they were right.
As I got older, my nearsightedness worsened, and my lenses became thicker and heavier. I have a permanent depression on the bridge of my nose from the weight of my spectacles. I always joked that if the sun shone over my shoulder and through my lenses at the right angle, I could start forest fires.
