I remember sitting in the exam room at my doctor’s office one July morning. My fingers were trembling as I dialed my husband Lincoln’s phone number. What followed was years of new and unfamiliar vocabulary — medical jargon that we were forced to understand and to utilize to make intensely difficult decisions. Positron emission tomography. Primary refractory state. Autologous stem cell transplant.
Still in shock and disbelief, we were bound to make crucial decisions about not only my health, but the health of a five-week-old fetus in my womb. My worst nightmare had come true — I was pregnant and had cancer.
