Northern Ontario's top political group wants safer highways 17 and 11: The Building Canada Act cannot only drive Canada’s economy, it could also make driving on Northern Ontario’s two major highways a lot safer, Danny Whalen says.

“The province of Ontario says we have the safest roads in Canada; I would argue we have some of the deadliest,” said Whalen, the president of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities.

FONOM bills itself as the unified voice of northeastern Ontario, representing and advocating on behalf of 110 cities, towns and municipalities in the region.

In an interview, Whalen, who is a councillor for the City of Temiskaming Shores, said FONOM is pushing hard to make highways 11 and 17 safer.

Marc Serre settles into new job, reflects
on today's political climate 

Marc Serré has turned a big page. 

 

The former Liberal MP has taken a new position with the Municipality of Markstay-Warren. And he is really excited about it. 

 

In July, Serre joined the community as its new chief administrative officer and clerk. 

 

“The reason this was a nice fit was because of my experience as an MP,” he said.

Sarah Guignard, Savvy Swords grab basketball headlines this summer

But for a twist of fate or two, Sarah Guignard and Savvy Swords would be teammates this upcoming year, preparing to lead the Lo-Ellen Prep Knights into battle against some of the best girls high school basketball teams in the province.

Though circumstances scattered them miles apart, the pair were both in Sudbury on Tuesday, accommodating yours truly for interviews based on some cool happenings in their lives.

A 17-year-old graduate of Valley View Public School and key member of the Prep Knights 2024-25 crew, Guignard has just returned from St. John’s, N.L., host city to the 2025 Canada Summer Games.
