Golden years: Great Lakes Museum celebrates 50 years of preserving Kingston's marine history

What started as a day of scuba diving in Lake Ontario has resulted in 50 years of history at the Great Lakes Museum.

Barbara Carson first started diving when she was 21 years old, but what she didn’t know then was that she would one day be one of the founding members of the museum itself.

It all began when an association of local scuba diving clubs, groups and individuals was formed in the winter of 1967-68.

Throughout their dives, members would find and collect artifacts from shipwrecks.

“It was always interesting to see something for the first time on the lake bottom. It was always fun to be out in the water,” Carson, now 91, said.

According to Carson, the group wanted to do something to protect and showcase their treasures.

On Aug. 26, just days after Ukraine celebrated Independence Day, United States President Donald Trump once again amplified Russian disinformation by erroneously blaming Ukraine for starting the war with Russia.

In sharp contrast to Trump’s disdain for democracy, Prime Minister Mark Carney has reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting democratic Ukraine in its valiant fight for survival.
