TOP OF THE AGENDA | Strikes kill at least 21 and damage EU's HQ |
| | Strikes were recorded in 13 different locations across the Ukrainian capital. Credit: Reuters | Russia's overnight attacks on Kyiv have infuriated the EU and the UK. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of "sabotaging hopes of peace", while EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the strikes represented "a deliberate choice to escalate and mock peace efforts". A five-storey residential building was destroyed, and the EU mission and nearby British Council were damaged. The attack on the Darnytskyi district was the most deadly. Katy Watson witnessed its aftermath. |

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED | Impact of Trump's crime crackdown in DC |
| | Before the crackdown, Trump had repeatedly criticised police figures - which showed violent crime falling in 2024 and so far in 2025. | US President Donald Trump began deploying National Guard troops, FBI and ICE agents to the streets of Washington DC on 11 August in a bid to crack down on crime. Figures from the city's Metropolitan Police Department show a decrease in offences for that period, but that's only part of the picture. |

| What do crime figures show? | There has been a significant fall in overall violent crime since the crackdown started, with 75 violent crimes recorded from 12-26 August, a drop of 23% on the previous two weeks. US crime analyst Jeff Asher says this may not reveal the whole picture: "Reporting [of crime] always lags so some of that decline is likely artificial." | How has crime decreased? | Property crimes, such as burglary and vehicle theft, fell by about a quarter over that period. There was a smaller fall in the crime of "assault with a dangerous weapon" and an increase in recorded "sex abuse". | How is the justice system coping with increased arrests and charges? | The impact was evident when we visited DC's District Court on Tuesday. Some defendants have found themselves arrested over crimes which would normally be dealt with by a lower court but are now facing federal offences, which generally result in longer jail time. Lawyers told us that the court was now struggling to process a bigger caseload. | | | |
