In 2010 we reported on “The U-bend of life”, or the idea that people tend to be most miserable in middle age—which is a bit of a bummer, as my middle-aged birthday is tomorrow. But new research shows that one generation is now unhappier than my cohort. Sorry young people.
In other news, Brazil’s former president, Jair Bolsonaro, will soon go on trial on charges that he attempted a coup in order to remain in power after losing his re-election bid in 2022. Donald Trump, who tried something similar, is aiming to subvert the process. But the trial offers Brazil a way out from polarisation and the opportunity to fix deep-seated problems. |
