Good afternoon. It’s Wednesday, Oct. 1.

In today's newsletter:

  • A federal government shutdown began today after Congress failed to find agreement to continue funding operations. The impacts in Alaska, home to a large federal workforce, could be significant.

  • The federal Education Department has denied the Anchorage School District’s appeal of its decision to cancel grant money for career and technical education at each of the district’s large high schools.

  • The virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic is still circulating, but some Alaskans seeking to be vaccinated against the disease may have to wait for that service.

Chunk, a towering brown bear with a broken jaw, swept the competition in this year's Fat Bear Week contest — his first win after narrowly finishing in second place three previous years. The bulky bruin estimated at 1,2000 pounds beat out Bear 856 in the final bracket of the popular online contest this week.

Anchorage weather

It's cloudy today with a high near 51 degrees, and rain is likely. We'll have rain again on Thursday before the forecast calls for partly sunny skies on Friday. Daytime highs will hover in the low to mid-50s over the next few days.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
