Woodson Band Competition

Woodson Marching Band took 2nd place at the JMU Band Competition

 Message from Mr. Greata

What a great showing at our football game last Friday night! We enjoyed a beautiful rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner performed by chorus members from across our Woodson Pyramid, a hard-fought game by our football team that featured an incredible 49-yard field goal, and of course, a fantastic halftime performance by our marching band.

You can catch highlights — including recordings from our chorus and marching band — on this week’s Woodson Weekly Podcast, available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Our marching band didn’t stop there! On Saturday, they traveled to James Madison University for a band competition, where they earned 2nd place in their class and 2nd overall out of 55 bands. Congratulations to all of our student musicians and staff for their hard work and dedication — we are so proud of you!

This week brings more exciting updates:

  • We’re opening a new weapons detection tower at Door 3 to support students arriving through the Kiss & Ride loop. We’re grateful to FCPS for recognizing our need and providing this additional equipment. Starting Tuesday, October 7, students arriving through the front Kiss & Ride should enter through Door 3 for screening.
  • Please note that there will be paving on Pickett Road through Thursday, October 10. Crews have agreed to work from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day to minimize impact, but we encourage families to allow extra time in the morning.
  • Wednesday is PSAT/SAT Day. There will be no school for freshmen. Sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT, while over 400 seniors have registered to take the SAT. This is also a two-hour early release day.

Looking ahead, Homecoming is less than two weeks away! We’ll kick off the celebration with Spirit Week, which begins this Friday since there’s no school for students on Monday, October 13. Check out the attached graphic for the full Spirit Week lineup — we can’t wait to see everyone’s school spirit!

We will be celebrating our Cross Country seniors this Wednesday at Burke Lake for their senior night and please check out woodsonsports.com for the schedules of all our athletic events.

Tuesday night, October the 7, we have a PTSO meeting, which will be held virtually. You can join us at this link.

Meeting ID: 935 6736 4291

Passcode: 7YQDVd

Thank you for your continued support, and I hope everyone enjoys a wonderful week!

Weekly Wrap Up

Checking out early?

The best and most efficient way to check out your student early is to send a note with them to the take to the Attendance Office. They will receive a pass to leave class at the specified time. You do not to need to come in to the school, as the student will simply come out to meet you.

For emergencies and last minute appointments you may also call the 24-hour attendance line at 703-503-4800 and leave a message. Please allow at least 1 hour for the pass to get put in.

Please be aware that if you sign out your student in person, it can take up to 30 minutes for the pass to reach them.

Important Reminders:

  • Email is not accepted for reporting absences or early checkouts. Phone messages for early checkouts are only accepted for emergencies.

  • If a student becomes sick during the school day, they must be checked out through the clinic, not the attendance office.

Go Paperless!

Did you know you can view your student’s report card under the Documents tab in ParentVUE? You also have the option to “Go Paperless” for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by simply checking the box under your account details. This ensures your documents are delivered digitally, saving paper and arriving faster — plus they won’t be mailed to your home.

Woodson HOCO Week

Rio Carnival HOCO Spirit Week Oct 10-17

INOVA Blood Drive

The INOVA Blood Drive will be coming up soon at Woodson on Oct. 27th. We would need your help as a parent volunteer to assist with signing in/out students for attendance purposes. If you are available for any time on that day between 8am-2:30pm, please email legrecodecer@fcps.edu.

We would also be grateful for your blood donation if you are interested. Parents can sign up for an appointment by emailing mphu@fcps.edu for a time slot available between 8am-2pm. We will try to make sure to minimize your wait time by having you in front of students. Thanks so much for your consideration.

FCPS Check Policy

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) gladly accepts checks and ACH electronic debits (e-checks) from an individual’s bank account for payment of various school related purchases and fees. In the event a check or ACH electronic debit is not honored by the bank, the returned item will be sent to a third-party check collection service, Checkredi Payment Services.  Using a third-party vendor reduces the administrative burden placed on school personnel.

Please note that a returned check fee will be charged to the check writer in addition to the face value of the check. The Commonwealth of Virginia allows a returned check fee of up to $50.  The individual’s account will be debited electronically for the face value amount and charged a fee of $30 per returned item.   If funds are not available, a Checkredi Payment Services representative may contact the individual to arrange payment.  When an individual issues a check or authorizes an ACH electronic debit from their bank account, they agree to these terms and conditions.

World Language Credit by Exam

The World Languages Credit by Exam (WLCBE) is an optional test for students in grades 7-12 who can speak and write (type) proficiently in a language other than English. Based on the results of the exam, students can earn 1, 2, and/or 3 world language credits. These credits are recorded on a transcript as Pass (P). No letter grade is assigned to any credits earned through the WLCBE.

The 2025 World Languages Credit by Exam will be administered at Woodson High School on Friday, November 21 during Returns at 9:45 AM in Cavalier Hall. It will last for both Return periods and conclude around 11:15AM.

Registration for the WLCBE is now open and closes on Friday, October 17, at 4 p.m. Late registrations will not be accepted.

To register your student for the exam, please turn in the Notification of Registration Opportunity WLCBE Form (available in eight different languages). You may print, complete, and sign the form and then have your student turn the form into their counselor in Student Services. Or, you may complete the form, scan it, and then email it to your student’s assigned counselor.

For additional information about the WLCBE, and to view a list of the languages offered on the exam, please visit the FCPS WLCBE website. This google form also contains detailed information about the WLCBE including links to a practice test in the AVANT testing platform.

If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school counselor

SEL Screening

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) believes in supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) for all students. In FCPS, students use a tool called the SEL Screener to think about their own SEL skills and experiences at school. Woodson High School students in grades 9-12 will be participating in the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in the Fall and Spring. The Fall SEL Screener date is Thursday, October 23, during 3rd Return.

Parents/guardians may request that their student not participate in the SEL Screener on an annual basis. This can be done via the Parent Digital Consent System OR by completing the Fairfax County Social Emotional Learning Screener Opt-Out Request Form, which is attached to this message below. If completing the form, please return it to your child’s school counselor (either by scanning and emailing it, or having your child bring it to the Student Services office). The deadline to submit the opt-out form is Wednesday, October 22.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE. For more information about the SEL Screener, including information on opting out, please see the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
