First, the bad news: Canadians are feeling a bit glum. According to this year’s World Happiness Report, Canada landed 18th out of 134 countries, the country’s worst showing ever. And it gets bleaker: Canadians under the age of 30 are particularly unhappy. While social media is an easy culprit to point to, experts say it’s not that simple. A combination of financial hardship and overall skepticism over the state of the world (think: climate change; democracy under attack) are dragging young people down. The good news? They’re learning to cope by redefining a meaningful life, embracing social connections and finding things to be hopeful about.
